Academician Chien Fu Jeff Wu cleaned up this summer carrying away four awards for his seminal contributions to statistical theory and methods for quality and productivity improvement.
Academician Wu received four prestigious acknowledgements for his work — the 2008 Shewhart Medal from the American Society for Quality (ASQ); an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada; the 2008 American Society for Quality, Quality and Productivity Research Conference, Conference Honoree; and in Taiwan, the 2008 Pan Wen-Yuan Award.
Academician Wu is a professor at the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta.
In May Academician Wu received the 2008 Shewhart Medal from the American Society for Quality (ASQ) for "seminal contributions to parameter design and quality improvement; for defining and building a modern system of experimental design; for education of a generation of quality professionals and professors; and for dedicated professional and editorial service in promoting quality improvement." The Shewhart Medal, named after Walter Shewhart, pioneer of modern quality control, is ASQ's highest honor bestowed "for outstanding leadership in the field of modern quality control.” The medal was presented to Wu during the ASQ World Congress in Houston.
In June, Academician Wu received an honorary doctorate degree in Mathematics from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. He delivered a speech to the graduating class at Waterloo during their commencement ceremony on June 13. Academician Wu was the GM/NSERC Chair in Quality and Productivity at Waterloo from 1988 to 1993.
Academician Wu was also selected as the 2008 American Statistical Association Quality and Productivity Research Conference, Conference Honoree for “seminal contributions to statistical theory and methods for quality and productivity.” The conference, jointly honoring Academician Wu and fellow statistician Prof. George Box, was held June 4 in Madison, Wisconsin.
Finally, in Taiwan Academician Wu also took away the 2008 Pan Wen-Yuan Award. This award with its cash prize is regarded as Taiwan's most prestigious technical award. Academician Wu is the first statistician or applied mathematician to have won the award.
Academician Wu holds the Coca-Cola Chair in Engineering Statistics at the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech, as well as holding a professorship at the school.
Before joining Georgia Tech in the summer of 2003, he was the H. C. Carver Professor of Statistics and Professor of Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; the GM/NSERC Chair in Quality and Productivity at the University of Waterloo; and a professor in the Statistics Department at the University of Wisconsin. He holds a B.S. in Mathematics from National Taiwan University and Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of California, Berkeley.
