Academician Chau-Nan Chen passed away on October 21 at the age of 73.
Being a Research Fellow of the Institute of Economics and the first director of the Institute of the Three People's Principles (renamed as Sun Yat-Sen Institute for Social Sciences and Philosophy, and presently the Research Center of Humanities and Social Sciences), Academia Sinica, Academician Chen was an expert of International Monetary and Financial Economics and a pioneer in investigating on Currency Substitution Theory.
After his retirement as a Distinguished Research Fellow of Sun Yat-Sen Institute for Social Sciences and Philosophy, Academia Sinica, Academician Chen still devoted himself to academic researches and was appointed Adjunct Research Fellow of the Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences and Correspondence Research Fellow of the Institute of Economics, Academia Sinica.
Academician Chen had been helping the Central Bank of the Republic of China on initiating and revising the currency policies. He had been a member of the Board of Directors of the Central Bank since 1996 and a member of Executive Committee since 2005.
