Academician Kuo-Nan Liou Awarded the Carl-Gustaf Rossby Research Medal

Academician Kuo-Nan Liou has been awarded the Carl-Gustaf Rossby Research Medal for 2018, the highest award from the American Meteorological Society (AMS). He was recognized by the AMS “for intellectual leadership and seminal contributions to improving the theory and application of atmospheric radiative transfer and its interactions with clouds and aerosols”. The award ceremony will be held at the 98th AMS Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas, USA, from 7 to11 January, 2018.
Academician Kuo-Nan Liou is an accomplished atmospheric scientist and geophysicist with a rich history of leadership service. He has made seminal contributions in the field of radiation, the prime driver in the Earth’s energy budget, and in cloud physics; these areas are fundamental to our understanding of climate dynamics and atmosphere-surface interactions. Dr. Liou has chaired two departments at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and has been the director of two separate Institutes there. He led hydrologic-atmospheric experimentation and founded the Joint Institute for Regional Earth System Science and Engineering at UCLA.
Dr. Liou is currently a Distinguished Professor of Atmospheric Sciences in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and Director of the Joint Institute for Regional Earth System Science and Engineering (JIFRESSE) at UCLA. In addition to his latest award, Dr. Liou was awarded the Roger Revelle Medal in 2013, the highest award of the America Geophyiscal Union. Dr. Liou was elected as an Academician of Academia Sinica in 2004.
The Carl-Gustaf Rossby Research Medal is the highest honor bestowed by the AMS to individuals on the basis of outstanding contributions to the understanding of the structure or behavior of the atmosphere. The award is in the form of a medallion.
