| Academia Sinica Signs Agreement to Buy Land from the Bureau of High Speed Rail |

Academia Sinica President Chi-Huey Wong and the Director General of the Bureau of High Speed Rail, Ministry of Transportation and Communications of the R.O.C, Allen Hu signed an agreement on January 19, 2016 to transfer 7.3 hectares of land located in the Reserved Area Section E of the High Speed Rail Tainan Station, Guiren District, Tainan City to Academia Sinica. Academia Sinica plans to use the newly acquired land to build a southern Taiwan campus in Tainan City in the future.
The reserved land is located near to the College of Photonics on the Tainan campus of National Chiao Tung University.
A comprehensive plan for the southern campus will be initiated in 2016. It is hoped that the new campus will help redress the balance in technological and cultural development in southern and northern Taiwan and also promote the further development of Academia Sinica. Academia Sinica already has many, long and well-functioning cooperative relationships with educational and research organizations in this area, and it is hoped that the building of this campus will create a synergistic effect that will propel development in southern Taiwan. In the early stage, research areas including agricultural science and biotechnology, photoelectric and green energy, and archeology and humanities will be the main focus of the new campus.
The smooth passage of the agreement was backed by the Executive Yuan and the Ministry of Transportation and Communications.
