Mr. Huan-Tang Chang International Affairs Office
All scientists dream of the day when their research results are published in top scientific journals. That is a great honor for a scientist, and even more so if the scientist happens to be a student. Mr. Cheng-Chung Wang, a student of Academia Sinica's Taiwan International Graduate Program (TIGP), has been awarded such a rare honor. One of his recent papers has been published in Nature issued on 19 April (he is the first author).
Mr. Wang is now affiliated with the Chemical Biology and Molecular Biophysics (CBMB) program, supervised by Professor Shang-Cheng Hung at the Department of Chemistry, National Tsing Hua University, who is also a joint appointment research fellow at the Genomic Research Center, Academia Sinica. Mr. Wang will be conferred a diploma certified jointly by the National Tsing Hua University and Academia Sinica this year to become the second graduate from TIGP.
Academia Sinica has always focused on outstanding research since its inception nearly eighty years ago. As we moved into the new millennium, we found it necessary to change with the times and meet the needs of the global academic community. In 2002, TIGP was established with the aim of training qualified and creative young scientists. We believe this will create the best learning and research environment. Vice President Sunney I. Chan, appointed by President Yuan T. Lee, took office as the first director. Two years later, he was succeeded by Vice President Ovid T. Tzeng. Vice President Chao-Han Liu is the current director.
TIGP is a joint effort of a consortium of top research universities and Academia Sinica. Our partner institutions include National Taiwan University, National Tsing Hua University, National Central University, National Chung Hsing University, National Defense Medical Center and National Yang-Ming University. In collaboration with these leading research universities in Taiwan, TIGP offers eight highly specialized, interdisciplinary PhD degree-granting programs at the cutting-edge of science and technology. Students are provided with an excellent intellectual environment with world-class faculty and state-of-the-art facilities. All the courses are conducted in English, allowing ample opportunities to discuss and interact with renowned scholars and fellow students. In addition to competitive graduate fellowships to each student admitted to the program, TIGP also offers its students cozy and convenient accommodation during their study. The Research and Administration Building of TIGP is scheduled for completion this month to offer facilities for teaching, studying and administrative activities.
The Chemical Biology and Molecular Biophysics (CBMB) program, with which Mr. Cheng-Chung Wang is affiliated, is the first international, interdisciplinary and cross-institutional PhD program in Taiwan as well in TIGP. In cooperation with the National Taiwan University and National Tsing Hua University, we believe the CBMB is an excellent interdisciplinary program. Student training focuses on basic science at the interface between chemistry/physics and biology, supported by 51 outstanding faculty members with a wide range of expertise. The program was established under the leadership of Dr. Andrew H-J Wang in 2002 and is now headed by Dr. Ming-Daw Tsai.
Since its inception, TIGP has attracted more and more elite international students from all over the world. Currently, there are 166 students from 25 countries studying in TIGP. In 2007, TIGP offers eight PhD degree-granting programs in the fields of Molecular Science and Technology, Molecular and Biological Agriculture Sciences, Molecular and cell Biology, Bioinformatics, Nano Science and Technology, Molecular Medicine and Computational Linguistics and Chinese Language Processing, in addition to the CBMB. For those who wish to do advanced research, to think critically, and to experience a prestigious international academic setting, TIGP is an ideal choice.
