Academia Sinica Academician Edward Leong Way, Emeritus Professor of Pharmacology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), died in California on June 12 at the age of 101. The research center of Dr. Leong Way, who was affectionately known to all as “Eddie,” focused on substance abuse. He researched both the underlying chemistry and the social attitudes toward and treatment of opioid addiction. He was a pioneer in his field and used his knowledge to serve the US public. He was influential in establishing the first methadone maintenance programs in Northern California. He also worked on drafting the US Comprehensive Drug Control Act of 1970, which made the possession of drugs of abuse a misdemeanor, rather than a felony. He was elected as an Academician of Academia Sinica in 1980. During the time he was a professor at UCSF, from 1949 for nearly 40 years, he worked with around 70 collaborators, including graduate, medical and in residence students, postdoctors and domestic and foreign mature scholars. Scholars who worked with Dr. Leong Way included five generations from one family, a father and son, and three Nathan B. Eddy Memorial Award recipients. The Nathan B. Eddy award is a top award for research efforts that advance knowledge of drug dependence. Approximately 400 publications were produced by Dr. Leong Way and his group that related to basic aspects of substance abuse, opiate pharmacokinetics, tolerance and physical dependence. The laboratory findings often provided concepts that gave meaning to clinical observations. During his lifetime, Dr. E. Leong Way received many academic honors for his outstanding contribution to academia and society. He received the American Pharmaceutical Foundation Achievement Award in Pharmacodyanamics, the Ebert Prize in 1962, Nathan B. Eddy Memorial Award in 1979 and the Nathan B. Eddy Mentorship Award for college on problems of drug dependence in 2004. In 1992, he received the Torald Sollmann Award in Pharmacology from the American Society for Pharmacology. Dr. E. Leong Way received his B.S. degree, M.S. degree and Ph.D. from the University of California, San Francisco and spent almost all his life at the university. At the university’s 150th anniversary, an archive about the history of Dr. E. Leong Way was made as part of the celebration because he had contributed so much to the school.
