Dr. Shih-Hsiung Wu, Distinguished Research Fellow of the Institute of Biological Chemistry at Academia Sinica, has received the 25th Wang Min-Ning Memorial Award for his outstanding contribution to the development of medical science and technology to improve the health of people in Taiwan. Dr. Wu has discovered new antibiotics for combating methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). This finding demonstrated that the antibiotics (Avenaciolides) are potent inhibitors of MRSA and fosfomycin-resistant MurA (the first enzyme in the biosynthesis of bacterial cell wall), laying the foundation for the development of new scaffolds for MurA-targeted antibiotics.
