The Pennsylvania State University Board of Trustees announced on January 21, 2011, that they have selected Academia Sinica Academician Dr. Ovid J.L. Tzeng to be one of seven Penn State alumni to receive a Distinguished Alumni Award this year. This is the university's highest award for an individual. An award ceremony will be held in June.
Pennsylvania State University, considered one of the top public universities in the US, was founded in 1855 with a threefold mission of teaching, research and public service. Dr. Tzeng received his doctoral degree in educational psychology from Penn State College of Education in 1973. He has been honored for his high academic contribution and scientific achievement in the area of Cognitive Neuroscience.
Dr. Tzeng currently serves as a Minister without Portfolio, Executive Yuan of the Republic of China (ROC), the highest administrative organ of the ROC. He is a leading pioneer in cognitive neuroscientific studies of the Chinese language. He has served on the Committee of Freedom and Responsibility in the Conduct of Science (CFRS) since 2006 and is a panel member of European Research Council.
Dr. Tzeng was previously a Professor of Psychology, University of California, Riverside (1974-1994), Dean of the College of Social Sciences (1992-1997), National Chung Cheng University, Vice President (1997-1999) and President (1999-2000) of National Yang-Ming University, Minister of the Ministry of Education, ROC (2000-2002), and Academia Sinica Vice President (2002-2006). He is also a member of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) (2010), and the American Psychological Society (2003).
During his career, Dr. Tzeng has received many awards including: Distinguished Professor from National Science Council, Taiwan (1993), the award from the Foundation for the Advancement of Outstanding Scholarship, the Service Award from the Chinese Institute of Engineers (2002), and the 7th Outstanding Achievement Award from Fei Tao Fei Honor Society (2003).
