Synopsis:
My Mom’s Daughter
Chen Yuan Chen
2007/Taiwan/Documentary/Color/Beta/82min
In 2002, I saw Mom's video artwork for the first time. My feelings for her combine both distance and familiarity. I started filming her simply out of a wish to see "HER” through the camera, yet in the process, I saw myself, the relationship between us and the suppressed memories and emotions of all the intervening years.
Housekeeper
Emel Celebi
2006/Turkey/Documentary/Color/Beta/50min
Housekeepers linger between the two worlds every day—theirs and their patrons’… They usually live in squatter houses or in the basements, and work at the nearby apartment blocks belonging to the upper classes. These are the women who sacrifice their futures by working in an informal sector called “housekeeping.”
Nyonya's Taste of Life
Wen Chih Yi
2007/Taiwan/Fiction/Color/Beta/78min18
“Nyonya's Taste of Life”—stories of Indonesian domestic helpers and Thai workers who came to Taiwan dreaming of a better life. Just like “Nyonya Cuisine,” which has a complex flavor combining sour, spicy, and sweet, the film is filled with misunderstandings, conflicts, miscommunications, and reconciliation (or estrangement) among ethnic Chinese, Indonesians, and Thais.
Enemies of Happiness
Eva Mulvad
2006/Denmark/Documentary/Color/Beta/59 min
This film is about personal courage—the courage to change the world and the courage to stand in the forefront of this battle. Malalai Joya is a 28-year-old woman from Afghanistan. This film follows her parliamentary campaign to her election as a delegate in the Wolesi Jirga, or National Assembly.
Somewhere Over the Clouds
Hsiao Mei Ling
2007/Taiwan/Documentary/Color/Beta/102min
A letter the filmmaker wrote to her late teacher and guide, the renowned American documentary filmmaker Robert Kramer (1939-1999), is woven throughout the plots of the story, as the boundaries of life, distance, language, identity and nationality are re-examined from the perspective of Elodie, her daughter.
