Musou Band, Taiwan’s first all-female Chinese orchestra composed of ladies from different universities throughout the island, was created by renowned Taiwanese composer Shueh-Shuan Liu in December 2008. The artistic director Ming-hua Wang is a prominent erhu performer and a former principal player of the National Chinese Orchestra Taiwan.
Musou Band blends traditional Chinese and modern western music styles to produce unique tones which challenge many conventional notions of Chinese classical music. A broad range of musical instruments are used in Musou Band’s performances such as dizi (bamboo flute), liuqin (a four-string mandolin), yangqin (a hammered dulcimer), pipa (Chinese lute), guzheng (Chinese zither), erhu (Chinese violin), daji (a percussion instrument) and cello.
