Academicians Chen-Shui Tsai (蔡振水) and Kwo-Ray Chu (朱國瑞) were selected the 2007 National Taiwan University (NTU) Outstanding Alumni in Scholarly Research Category. They were honored during the Anniversary Convocation of NTU on November 15, 2007.
Academician Chen-Shui Tsai, Founding Director of the Research Center for Applied Sciences (formerly the Institute for Applied Science and Engineering Research) of Academia Sinica, is a Professor, Above-Scale, of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at University of California, Irvine, USA. Dr. Tsai was recognized for his seminal contributions in Integrated Optics and Ultrasonics Science and Technology. In 2002 Professor Tsai returned to full-time teaching and research at University of California, Irvine. He is currently engaged in research on Ultrasonic Nozzles for Biomedical Applications, Silicon Nanophotonics, and Magnetic Microwave Devices, and continues research collaboration with former colleagues in Taiwan.
Academician Kwo-Ray Chu is a Professor at Department of Physics, National Tsing Hua University. He specializes in plasma physics and, in particular, the generation of coherent electromagnetic waves via the electron cyclotron maser (ECM) interaction. The ECM has undergone a remarkable evolution from basic research to device implementation while continuously being enriched by new physical insights. By delivering unprecedented power levels, ECM-based devices have achieved a unique position in the millimeter and submillimeter regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, and have been put into numerous applications such as fusion plasma heating, advanced radars, industrial processing, materials characterization, particle acceleration, and tracking of space objects.
