Camphor Tree and Autumn Maple Tree

Both species are common street trees and centenarian trees. Laurel family is one of major ingredients of forest at low and medium altitude in Taiwan. Camphor tree can be distilled to give camphor (now synthesized artificially, mainly as an ingredient in celluloid), which was one of important export goods in Ching Dynasty to earlier Ming-Kuo. The aromatic wood is good for carving and making furniture because of its insect-repellent. But the native camphor tree forest is almost disappeared by logging for above usages. Now there are planation reserves to conserve the spceis. Cinnamon, a common spice, is also from the same genus (Cinnamomum) as camphor tree.

Autumn maple tree is a good shade tree; the wood is used for construction and furniture; fruits are favorite food for birds. Some local places are named after this plant¡¦s Chinese name. Spurge family is a large family, with about 300 genera and more than 8000 species. Christmas flower, variegated leaf croton and tung oil tree are notable ornamentals of the family.

Characteristics: Evergreen tree, bark fissured. Leaves simple, alternate, ovate, margin entire, whitish below, 3 main veins, fragrant when crushed; inflorescence panicle, axillary, yellowish-green; berry black when ripe, ca. 1 cm across.

This genus has about 350 species, distributed throughout E Asia to Australia, and S Pacific Ocean. In Taiwan there are 14 native species.

This genus has only 1 species, widely distributed in Indomalesia. In Taiwan distributed throughout low and medium altitudes.
