During drought stress, plants produce fewer cells. While this can be a good strategy to conserve water, it can also restrict biomass and yield of crops. Results published in Plant Cell<\/em> by the laboratory of Dr. Paul Verslues at Institute of Plant and Microbial Biology, shows how altering key regulatory genes lets the plant maintain a larger population of dividing cells (larger meristem) during drought and thus maintain higher growth rate.<\/p>\n
