A collaborative study by Dr. Tzu-Hao Lin at the Academia Sinica Biodiversity Research Center and the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), revealed that deep-sea ecosystems exhibited distinct soundscape characteristics. For example, the vent site was dominated by sounds from geological activities, while the abyssal plain was much quieter than all other sites. In brief, offshore ecosystems targeted by deep-sea mining are more susceptible to impacts of anthropogenic noise; therefore, the monitoring of soundscapes is essential to the environmental assessments in the deep ocean. The results of this study were published in Limnology and Oceanography on August 26th.<\/p>\n
