After returning to Taiwan to serve as Academia Sinica President, Hu Shih devoted himself to the cause of independent academic development, and cultivated a generation of outstanding Taiwanese scholars. Assisted by Wu Ta-You, he drafted guidelines to establish the National Council on Science Development, which laid a firm foundation for humanities and technology development in Taiwan over 60 years.

On February 24, 1962, at the age of 72, Hu Shih died of cardiac arrest while seeing off attendees at the Convocation of Academicians. The Memorial Hall was founded in December of that year. In 1964, Mr. C.V. Starr, a former friend of Hu Shih, donated a fund of US$25,000. The exhibition room was set up on the right side of the Hall, and formally established on February 24, 1965.

The Hu Shih Memorial Hall consists of three parts: Hu Shih’s residence; exhibition room, including Hu Shih’s works, photos, etc.; Hu Shih’s grave near the AS campus. The Hall was where Hu Shih spent the last years of his life, and features a vast collection of letters, photos, manuscripts, and books from that time period. Based on these collections, we can gain a better understanding of Hu Shih and the world he belonged to.
