The Lingnan Fine Arts Museum is the only art gallery on the Academia Sinica campus. It was established in June 2002, when former AS president Yuan-Tseh Lee envisioned a museum specializing in the fine arts, which, despite the presence of several museums containing ancient artifacts, had yet to be realized. Therefore, after receiving generous donations of more than one hundred works from the renowned Lingnan School painter Professor Ho-nien Au, as well as overseas collections, AS allocated space to found the Lingnan Fine Arts Museum. The first professional archive of Lingnan paintings in Taiwan thus ended up being established on our campus.

Named after its region (“Lingnan”, literally “South of the [Five] Mountains” in Chinese), the Lingnan School is famous for innovation in modern Chinese art history. Its core values include promoting the regeneration of traditional Chinese painting plus combining the techniques of Western painting and Chinese ink painting; thus it is also known as the “School of Compromise”. In its adoption of ancient models, the Lingnan School has valued the qualities of various other schools, including the Wu and Zhe schools of the Ming dynasty as well as the Southern and Northern schools. Its artists combined and refined both the literary elegance of the Southern School and the heroic quality of the Northern School, while always returning to the veracity of nature. Pioneering figures like Jian-fu Gao, Qi-feng Gao, and Shu-ren Chen, known as the Three Masters of the Lingnan School, infused traditional techniques with a modern touch to expand their work and venture into well-known unique and majestic styles.

The Lingnan Fine Arts Museum possesses a collection of over 120 works from notable artists as well as contemporary figures, including Lingnan School founder Lian Ju and the Three Masters. In addition, the Museum possesses the acclaimed sculptor Chong-en Cao’s works of the Three Masters and Professor Shao-ang Zhao. The Museum is devoted to promoting the appreciation of Chinese painting via exhibitions and workshops.
