Academia Sinica is pleased to announce that Academician David Der-Wei Wang was elected as a new member of the American Academy Arts & Sciences on April 23, 2020, in recognition of his prominent contributions to the study of Chinese literature.<\/p>\n

Dr. Wang has devoted his distinguished career to the study of literature. His research interests include modern and contemporary Chinese literature, late Qing fiction and drama, and comparative literary theory. His formulation of the concepts \u201cRepressed Modernities\u201d and \u201cLyrical Tradition\u201d have become important theoretical foundations for contemporary literary studies, receiving great recognition and emphasis in the field of Chinese Studies.<\/p>\n

In addition, Dr. Wang has made unstinting efforts in introducing Taiwanese literature to international audiences through the publication of the Modern Chinese Literature from Taiwan<\/em> translation series, which has\u00a0significantly contributed to the construction of literary theories in Taiwanese and Chinese literature. Notable Taiwanese authors whose works are included in this series include Huang Chun-ming, Li Qiao, Li Yung-p\u2019ing, and Chu T\u2019ien-wen.<\/p>\n

Dr. Wang served as Associate Professor at National Taiwan University (1983-1986) and Head of the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Columbia University (1997-2002). He received the National Award for Arts in 1993, and was elected Academia Sinica Academician in 2004. Dr. Wang is currently the Edward C. Henderson Professor of Chinese Literature at Harvard University.<\/p>\n

Founded in 1780, the American Academy Arts & Sciences is dedicated to electing notable researchers who excel in a broad array of fields while also working to advance the public good. Among the 276 new members elected this year are immunologists, bioethicists, poets, singers, doctors, and social activists; each member represents today\u2019s innovative thinkers in their fields and professions.
