Introduction：

What does it mean to bring animals into politics?

Various proposals have recently been made for the institutional representation and consideration of animals’ interests in human political decision-making processes. Dr. Sue Donaldson argues, however, that humans must also learn to do politics with animals, and not just on their behalf.

This requires (1) understanding animals’ diverse forms of political agency; (2) exploring the role of humans in enabling rather than disabling those agencies; and (3) developing a plural model of overlapping and interdependent political jurisdictions to accommodate the complexity of human-animal political relationships and communities. Dr. Sue Donaldson will consider in particular the case of the urban ‘commons’ shared by humans, domesticated and liminal animals.
